Journal of Dr. James Stuart : of Beaufort, S.C. 1814, 1814-ca. 1960.

Bound typescript (carbon) copy (ca. 1960) of the travel journal of James Stuart transcribed by an unknown individual. Volume contains entries concerning Stuart's travels with his wife Mary from Beaufort, South Carolina through North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania. After stopping in Philadelphia, Stuart continued to New Jersey where he took a steamboat to New York City. Here he remarks on "the many evils of war" for "scarcely a sail is to be seen where once the entrance appeared almost obstructed with crowded sails and commerce inlivened the scene by continually changing the landscape." The Stuarts then proceeded up the Hudson River, then back to New York City, then to New Jersey. Heading south, they crossed Delaware and entered Maryland visiting Baltimore before continuing their journey. Stuart, describing the ruins he saw in Washington, D.C., notes the city "had been polluted by an invading foe." After visiting Mount Vernon and George Washington's grave, they continued through Virginia and North Carolina to their home in Beaufort, South Carolina. The diary contains a list of places visited, distances between places, expenses incurred, and additional comments. Includes photostats of a page of the diary and of photographs of portraits of James Stuart and his wife Mary.
